Reminds me of a quote from, I believe, Car Talk. She is unencumbered by the thought process.

Another point ... The state model allows us as a nation to experiment with different approaches to problems and issues, with at least some higher level oversight and backup should something go seriously off the rails. That's a feature, not a bug.

"Give all the power back..." -- who proposed that?

What does get talked about is to restore to the states the powers they retain under the Constitution, and to make the Federal government obey the limitations in that document. That would, of course, trim the Federal government to perhaps 5% of its current size.

A unitary omnipotent Federal government was proposed during the Convention -- by Alexander Hamilton. It's worth reading (James Madison quotes it in full in his "Debates in the Federal Convention of 1787". You'll be horrified, and you'll understand why Neil Smith in several of his novels called the advocates of unrestricted government control "Hamiltonians". But that proposal went down like a lead balloon, not even getting a second to be discussed.

Unfortunately, TR and Wilson and FDR and their ilk gradually implemented Hamilton's plan in practice even if it never appeared in any words. And here we are...

It is kind of obvious from the name of the country. United States of America.

As in, numerous individual states united together. If it were the way she is talking about, the country would have a different name. Say... the country of DC?
