when I became an 07 FFL holder I soon realized the “gun culture “ is chock full of huge egos and tiny “guns”… the stupid is chest deep and climbing. its immensely frustrating when others handle firearms like an empty cigarette pack… and they refuse to listen to ANY suggestions..

Why do people keep doing stupid things? Because people are frequently mentally lazy, which inevitably results in them doing stupid things.

And for all the "gun free" places? The work spaces where you're not allowed to carry?

The existence of this bill proves most law makers are both evil and stupid.

The proposed law provides for leaving a firearm in your vehicle, in a locked trunk or glove box, or secured container affixed to the vehicle. Since most glove boxes are lockable with the vehicle key (unless your car uses one of those wireless fobs instead of a key), that counts.

The question is, since most cars have these things already, why aren't traveling gun owners AT THE VERY LEAST using them? Taking it into the hotel room with you is better, obviously, but tucking it out of sight under the driver seat is the equivalent of "hiding" it under your pillow while your kids are around instead of the pistol safe in the drawer. They wouldn't do the latter, so why do they do the former?

I'm just gonna throw this out there; it's what I do when traveling with my carry gun.

I invested in a pistol lockbox a while back. It's about the size of a cigar box, and came with a steel cable to wrap around furniture or lag bolts to secure it in place. It's easy to move when the lid is open. I bring it with. I find a spot in the hotel room to affix it, and on the RARE occasion I must leave the gun in the car, I wrap the cable around the seat frame or other hard point.

The long and short is, the gun is always secured, either in the lockbox or on my person.

Thefts from cars are about speed and quick access, not an "Ocean's 11"-style heist. The thieves are usually in and out in 10-15 SECONDS with whatever they can grab. Ergo, you don't have to turn your car into Fort Knox; you just have to secure your valuables enough to make it too much trouble.

IIRC, my lockbox cost around $50-60 on sale, regular price is around $100 -- less than many quality holsters. It's a small price to pay to NOT have my gun stolen or found by my kids or their friends.

Lockboxes are a cheap solution, most gloveboxes take about as long to open when they're locked as when they're unlocked. I would never leave my firearm in the car at an overnight, not even at my own house. We are dealing with the same kind of people that walk off and leave their pistol sitting on the toilet paper holder at a public restroom though...
