Well, I certainly don't need to eat *there*. That method also levies the tip on the sales tax, not just the bill for food and drink.

I had a refreshing change over Christmas. Mrs B and I went to a small place. Tip options programmed into das card machine were 10%, 5% and 2%. They were fast, friendly, and the food was very good.

I was told not to tip on the sales tax (I live in NYS). Since our tax is 8.75%, I just double the tax. For good service

Yes, me too. 20% for excellent service. 10% for ~ service and 5% for bad service. Bad food & bad service=0% and yes, I'll walk out.

30% tip, eh? Dream on, sucker.

And "times it by three" -- grammar, anyone?

My thought exactly. "Times it by three"? What are you, in 2nd grade?

And no, I will not tip 30%; that's ridiculous. For fantastically amazing food and service -- and I mean, everything is flawless -- I might go 25%. Great food and service gets 20%, so-so gets 10-15%. Crappy of both gets 0-5%.

Additionally, a mandatory "gratuity" will cause me to never darken their doorstep again. A gratuity or tip is a line item *I* right in. If it's universally and automatically charged, it's not a tip, it's a service fee, and charging it to everyone removes the incentive to provide good food and service.

To make matters worse it's going to take the Common Core trained 45 minutes minimum of keeping your table tied up while they do the math on that.

30% as a BASELINE? And on the tax, too? If their noses are as high up in the air as their tip expectations I wouldn't want to be served by them, much less eat there. No way, no how.

The employer pays the employees.

Not the employer’s customers.
