i never understood everyone putting cameras hooked up to the internet in their home… that and appliances hooked to the friggin internet..

Or if they do start to consider it, they immediately think "oh someone would never..."

Perhaps also "but why would they bother with me, I'm not rich / famous / ... etc."

If they come from China, you should assume that they come with back doors, so even if "security controls" are mentioned in the documentation there is no reason to believe they work.

The solution is either locally controlled cameras (without any network connection), or cameras with open source software. A possible option that might be adequate is a wired (not WiFi) camera connected to a firewall that does outbound filtering.
