remember nafta? liberals boasting how wonderful it will be for America… been to detroit lately?? ol’ Ross Perot was right. if democrats get back in power you will see a giant snit fit of fukkery to punish Americans who dared to vote for the wrong candidate… America used to be self sufficient while exporting much of our abundant products. in the interest of “fairness “ we became the lazy 20 something living in moms basement with our hand out for everything..

now with lots of hard work We the People can become strong again .

I do remember NAFTA. It illustrates a problem with politics and the uninformed.

The F in NAFTA stands for Free. Free trade agreement. A liberal will read that, and assume it meant there were no longer tariffs on any goods that went over the Northern or Southern borders. But... the opposite was the actual case. The other countries had free reign to tariff us, but we could not tariff them.

Then again, the same people thought the Inflation Reduction Act would actually reduce inflation.

Hell of it is this has been going on for decades, through multiple administrations, Democrat and Republicans. I'm not a fan of Trumps personality, but I do like the fact that he lays his balls on the table and dares the other side to do the same.

There is too much ignorance out there. Too many people are of the belief that because they do not know about it, it either does not exist, or it is not important.

How many people know about the massive tariffs other countries place on US goods? No one. So, all they think is orange man is causing their daily costs to go up for no reason.

"Partners implies a MUTUALLY beneficial agreement between the parties."

Mutually, not necessarily equally. Agreements can benefit one party more than the other, but it's always a net positive for both (even if the "positive" is non-tangible, like the good feels you get from donating to charity every year). No party in its right mind enters into an agreement that harms rather than benefits.

Other than that small nit-pick, spot on! The U.S. has become complacent on the world economic stage. We've let others take advantage of our national generosity for their own benefit ... which always leaves us holding the short end of the proverbial stick.

One reason for tariffs on imports is to encourage domestic production. We don't make much here anymore, we import a lot of the non-food items we consume (and even quite a few of the food items, too). What we do manufacture and ship off, gets charged tariffs on the other end, so local production at that end is on-par or cheaper.

IMO, the smartest thing Trump did with the tariffs, is ultimately leave the ball in the other nations' courts. It was a threat -- a real threat, since I fully believe he would have followed through -- but it was meant to get those other nations to come to the negotiating table to broker fairer trade deals that benefit BOTH sides, not just their economic interests at the expense of ours. And that threat mostly worked -- every nation other than China has agreed to negotiate (China is doubling down; I hope their people stay afloat amidst all these price fluctuations) -- and so Trump has agreed to "pause" tariffs (except for China).

Will the new trade deals increase prices? Probably, a little, for at least a little while. But ramping up domestic production and NOT relying as much on imports, will create jobs and prosperity for more Americans, and keep our domestic economy much healthier, more sustainable, and less dependent on foreign industry. (As someone who values independence as a non-tangible benefit, that last one is particularly important to me.)
