Speaking of small guns with low perceived recoil, to me a nice example is the Boberg XR-9, now made by Bond Arms ("Bullpup"). Boberg did a .45 ACP version as well, Bond hasn't taken that one up yet, I hope they will. They have to fix its misfeed problem first, though. The XR-9 works better, it's a different magazine design.
