It is funny that we never experienced this back in Miami, but I do love the custom of having some piece of no longer wanted furniture or any other item, place on the curb and attach a FREE sign to it. It actually gets take faster than I would have ever imagined and beat any paid waste disposal company, and you may even get a thank you scribbled in the sign.
We only had bad luck with a love seat that was heavy to begin with and then got rained on. Nobody wanted to take it and eventually the nephews took it away and did that very quaint Southern custom (which I approve) and tossed it in a burn pile.
I have seen some of that stuff again in the front lawn and side of a couple of the local Churches of Crank of the Rotten Teeth, but at least their addiction has a positive byproduct for those in need of crap removal.
I actually find putting price on it moves it faster. Folks will hesitate to grab a free item, but if it has a $50 on it, they will gladly take it away for free.
Something about increasing the perceived value...
also, many municipalities impose fees at the dump…. oh, sorry, TRANFER station if you bring in any items but bagged trash. our town requires stickers on each bag costing between 1-3 bucks… I have dumpster so i don’t have to deal with the dump nazi..
