The ice maker in our not-too-old fridge never worked right. It had to be reset every couple of months or so. Then it finally gave up the ghost altogether and, of course, once the warranty had long expired.
I checked online and the replacement for the whole system run about $200. Then you still need a tech to come fix the thing and that will probably set us back another $150 as they chare $50 to $70 just to show up.
A couple of days later, I get home and hear the Missus getting ice from the fridge. Surprised, I asked if the darn thing came to life and she said “No, I just bought a small bag of ice at Walmart and dumped in the box.”
During the summer, we were using a bag under two weeks. Right now in the cold season we are about three and a half, almost four weeks. That averages a bag every 3 weeks. The small bag of ice at Walmart is $1.88.
$350 worth of ice bags comes to 186 bags. That times 3 weeks is 558 weeks or over 10 years of ice supply and by then we would probably start looking for another fridge.
Is it annoying to load the box? Not for her, that is why she has me, right? Me? I just shut up and do it.
Damn, she knows her economics. She can squeeze a penny better than any locomotive.

Should you be concerned about the possibility she begins to compare costs of husband versus part time handyman? Is there a life insurance policy on you? :-)
