1) Melanin Insufficiency syndrome is becoming a leading cause of death in LA. Police are seemingly powerless to stop its exponential rise. By design.
2) It is extremely difficult, expensive, and time consuming to obtain a license to exercise your Rights in LA County. By contrast, Melanin Positive individuals are allowed to bypass the licensing process and immediately procure and carry. By design.
3) If, as a Melanin Insufficient person, you were to use your Right of Self Defense in LA County, you would face the full force of the Legal, Political and Media systems intent on destroying you. By design.
4) Your Melanin Positive attackers, however, would be gently ushered through the revolving doors of the Legal system. By design.
5) The Media would take scant notice of this situation, if at all. By design.
The only thing you can do is get the @#$% out, as we did 14 years ago.
Gee, he would have been OK if he had just called 911. /sarc off
An 86-year-old neighbor and friend walks twice a day for exercise. Her husband died over 10 years ago, so I try to help. Gave her my best, and favorite, walking stick to word off whom/whatever if necessary and two carry styles, one keychain and one clip, of pepper spray. Her concern is with unleashed mutts. She won't carry the pepper spray, even after I demonstrated it, and feels more comfortable with the PLASTIC toy baseball bat than the walking stick.
Given that she feels somewhat comfortable with that toy bat, she is probably in more danger than if she carried nothing and were more nervous/observant.
I remember a study of some years ago, which found that resisting violence with a gun produces a better outcome than not resisting, but resisting some other way (unarmed, or with a weapon other than a gun) produces a worse outcome.
That wouldn't surprise me. Let's face it -- anything other than a gun means hand-to-hand, even if knife, stick. bat, crowbar, or spray. However, our community is VERY low on crime (I see an address-pinned report every week). Her pretty much exclusive concern is the occasional unleashed mutt. Heh. I think sometimes they can be more dangerous than some bipeds though, especially after the recent pit bull mauling and dragging off the victim incident (NOT here!).
For the whole of history people have had to rely mostly upon themselves for their own safety. Nothing has changed much, though I suspect we are safer here in most of the West than people were eons ago. But the handgun is a godsend for modern man. Always safer to deal with Orcs when they are still beyond reach.

Put them both (all) down.
