When the Red Robin is Wrong.
I hate when Cardinal do stupider stuff like opening their mouths and saying crap like that. He is trying to miss-apply the Catholic Doctrine of Papal Infallibility. This has been misused over and over to pass the idea that whatever the Pope says is automatically Catholic Church dogma to be followed by the faithful or else. BULLSHIT!
Papal Infallibility applies to matters of the doctrine as in the Catechism and its application within the life of Catholics. It has never been intended to give seal of absolute approval and dutiful obedience and enforcement to anything political coming out the mouths of those wearing the Papal Mitre.
The Catholic Church has been involved in warfare either directly or in support for at least a millennia. The Crusades and up to Julius II were direct action armies and to this day, the Vatican sports an army within its walls.
The confusion about involvement in politics probably has more to do with the effectiveness of Pope John XXIII and his defiance against the Soviets. He was able to be a thorn on the side of the Kremlin and support Poland’s struggle without becoming a mealy-mouthed preaching fool and getting the Catholic Church directly involved, not hiding behind Jesus. So much so that I am one of those who believe that Mehmet Ali Ağca who tried to assassinate Pope John was a tool of the Soviets.
Pope John XXIII survived first the Nazis in his youth and then the Soviet regime. Pope Leo XVI biggest threat he ever faced was probably eating bad ceviche and the impossibility to find deep-dish Chicago Pizza in South America

Go back to the first millennium and tell that to St. Paul before he confronted St. Peter.
Having done my time in Catholic grade school, I can assure you that the Pope is infallible. When it applies to Church doctrine, only. End of story.
Outside of that, he is just another human being, with biases and prejudices, and uninformed opinions. I would no more ask my plumber about a health issue then I would expect the Pope to be correct about world politics.
