I love history but finding a book that makes history interesting is a 50-50 gamble. I am currently reading a book about successfully rescuing Allied pilots from Europe and even though the theme is compelling, the way it was written makes it a boring narrative almost to the point of wanting to drop the book in the nearest library donation box.
This one however is just the opposite. Although it presents very few moments of gun derring-do, they are portrayed as the crucial spot in history they belong to. And the author does a great job explaining the men and what motivated them, warts and all to coin a phrase.
And if that was not enough for me to like the book, I found out that an ignored but very important moment in firearms history is located not 30 minutes from where I live. I will make a post at a later date about it.
So, get the book and enjoy it.
If you ever find yourself around San Jose, CA, a visit to the Winchester Mystery House is worthwhile if you have the time.
Or at least it was when I was last there, a decade or two ago.
The Remington Museum in Ilion, NY was a great visit 50 years ago. Wonder what happened to that collection when the plant closed last year?
