There is always a generation that did not catch the drift.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston police said it is working to track down two suspects after a man was nearly robbed of his gun on the city’s west side on Tuesday.
The Houston Police Department said that at about 4 p.m., a man who had been doing some target practice at Top Gun was followed back to his apartment about a mile away on Rampart by three suspects.
Police say once at the complex, the suspects held a gun on the man and tried to grab his bag that had a couple of guns in it
The man retrieved a gun and fired one shot, hitting one of the suspects in the chin, HPD says.
Police said the suspect was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
This happens. Not quite a regular thing, but you will find some morons that suddenly think “How come nobody had done this before? Let’s do it ourselves!” and get shot by the lack of search engine usage.
The first time I heard of a case like this was almost 30 years ago and the deed was tried in the parking lot of a gun range I went a couple of times in Broward County (FL) and never returned because they were crappy about gun safety. IRRC, two dudes tried to jack a customer coming out and at least one of them had to wait for a ride from the county’s coroner van while the other was taken to the ER with unexpected hematological leaks.
Fast forward 10 years and again in Broward County, this time at Markham Park range, a group of four “yutes” who ferally approached a gun owner who was on a safety table trying to work out a failure to extract jam in his pistol. The dumb asses did not realize he was a part of a much larger group of civilians training on the other side of the range and who noticed them almost at first sight. The look in their faces when about a dozen heavily armed sweaty guys took their turn to surround them was just priceless. When asked to leave, they did so rather quickly and very apologizing humbly. No, we did not call authorities because truly nothing criminal had happened, but I believe one of them may have had “retention issues” by the way we walked out while shaking a leg as if something was running down his pants.
And the usual recommendation of keeping your head on a swivel applies here. Also, never use all your ammunition in the range and make sure you go back home with a full load. Personally, the “carry mags with the good BB’s” stay loaded and in the range bag and use spares to practice, that way I avoid the issue of unloading and loading magazines after practice session. If possible, be ready before leaving the range but you may want to double check with the place just in case they have restrictions about loaded weapons outside the firing line.

If I'm shooting my carry gun, my last magazine through is almost always my standard defense load. Of course I bring two mags loaded like that with me.
On the "rediscovery" aspect ... Mrs B also rediscovered something. She is now carrying an older-model, heavier pistol that she loves shooting and shoots well. Her previous carry piece was lighter, more compact, and a lot snappier that she didn't shoot as well. So she's shooting more, and more often, with her regular carry piece. Huh.
Which reminds me, I need to order some more 9.
I generally carry a spare to the range. Ready to use , if necessary.
