The rumors of The Coup are getting louder.

And then news items like this are popping up here and there.

Several top Democrats privately tell us the rising pressure of party congressional leaders and close friends will persuade President Biden to decide to drop out of the presidential race, as soon as this weekend.

Why it matters: The 81-year-old president, now self-isolating with COVID, remains publicly dug in. But privately he's resigned to mounting pressure, bad polls, and untenable scrutiny making it impossible to continue his campaign, the Democrats tell us.

Behind the scenes: The private message, distilled to its bluntest form: The top leaders of his party, his friends and key donors believe he can't win, can't change public perceptions of his age and acuity, and can't deliver congressional majorities.

If you are old enough as in being alive during the Iron Curtain years, you will remember that the Soviets would get rid of their leaders who had fallen from favor of the Politburo via “sudden illness” and after an appropiate lenght of time, it was decided for the Good of the Party to either “decease” him or have somebody write a terse letter of resignation indicating health problems and the such.

The Democratic party does not have too much time. In fact, just about a month before they go all chips in with Joe Biden or crown a new Secretary General select a new candidate for president. They do have a fine line to walk: VP Harris is unpalatable somewhere between Surströmming canned fish and Gorgonzola cheese and probably with less IQ which would make her presidency a catastrophe across the board for the Dems come November. This means keeping the President “alive” but having him declare he won’t seek the re-election and that he gives his blessing to whomever the party selects in the hope that the Primary voters do not feel robbed of their choice or worse, fooled into elect Biden as a feasible candidate for re-election.

If they do not play their checkers well, not only they will lose the Presidency beyond the margin of error, but both Senate and House may go Republicans and by a lot of seats.
