This is a follow up to my previous post "The importance of using the proper shotgun shells.” since now we have good video excerpts of the incident.
The critter was shot first and still managed to return fire as he fled. It was only good outcome because they were not aimed shots.
My previous stance of using at least buckshot stands and now I want to add one that I should have mentioned before.
Anything worth shooting once is worth shooting twice. Keep shooting till the threat ceases.
This is also a good moment to rethink your choice of weaponry. I am going to admit that while I have a pump shotgun, I have not shot it enough to address a situation like the one above and that is: Aim-shoot-rack-re acquire-shoot-rack-re acquire (repeat if necessary).
I double tap with sidearm almost automatically, but I need to do that with long guns more.
And yes, if you have a semi rifle, one of them Scary Black Rifles, the racking part takes care of itself and that is my weapon of choice for home defense. But we need to be proficient when we do not have access to our weapon of choice and the only thing available is a pump shotgun or even a coach gun.
Mine is a semi, also. Wouldn't be, because I trust a pump more, but semi mainly because this old fart just can't be sure to properly handle the pump anymore. Got to adapt, ya know. One thing I learned when I switched to semi was the importance of velocity of the shells. The manufacturer wasn't kidding when they said those ten or so boxes of shells I was using in the pump were junk and wouldn't cycle the action. Had never thought of that before.
Guns dont win gunfights; gunfighters do. Learn to run whatcha got, learn to run it well.
