Saw this in the FBs
An obvious fun photo aimed to jest at drummers, but also a true thing among the old Audio Engineer community stripes that you acquired: You will record something in the bathroom.
Short explanation is that the tiles and smallness of the room gives a particular bright and short reverberation that may apply in certain situations. My favorite use was one guy who wanted to make his guitar sound like it was coming out of a very old Pignose amp yet sound very defined. Well Guitar Players are “special” as in “Honey, the therapists said you need to wear your helmet all the time” kind of special.
I had a generic small practice amp that I put in the bathroom and then a metal bucket on its side with the mouth towards the cone of the amp. I aimed a Shure SM-57 inside the bucket and had the guy play his lick. It sounded weird, I would say not that good but it was “defined” and most importantly, the client liked it.
And I also have to say that was one of the least unusual things I had to do in the studio.
Nope, not telling the really weird ones. Statute of limitations and international laws may still apply.
Well, it did work for Weird Al...
I seem to recall a toilet and a Mason jar being the basis for special effects on Orson Welles's broadcast of War of the Worlds. Specifically, the sound of the Martian cylinders unscrewing their hatches.
