I have to admit the amount of historical and geopolitical ignorance expressed in the above capture is amazing for somebody with his alleged expertise and his disdain for the alleged ignorance of the American people.
Let’s begin with one that always gives me a bit of rash: The country is called Colombia and that other one is the name used by several cities and town found across the country. And with that let’s get on with the rest of the tweet.
The dream of Latin Countries unifying died on December 17, 1830 when Simon Bolivar passed away. He defeated the Spanish Empire and liberated 5 countries in South America but could not keep them together as one unit nor ally them with the rest of the Latin countries liberated by General San Martin. There were and are some loose ‘associations’ based on economics or other things, but even today where a lot of countries in South America are run by Socialist and Communists who are supposed to be using the same playbook, none of the countries trust the others and, in some cases, hate each other.
Colombia and Venezuela have mistrusted each other since 1821. There was a beef between Generals Bolivar and Santander and even there might have been some assassination attempts and mutual accusations about land grabbing. Border claims between the countries have been running over a century and are still unresolved. Colombian guerillas have used Venezuelan territory to hide from the Colombian Army and under the Chavista and post Chavista regimes, they have also had other types of support. Just like the VietCong used to slip into Cambodia or Laos, the ELN and FARC splinter groups use Venezuela as hideout with the full knowledge of the Chavez and now Maduro Government.
Next is “unifying” Colombia and Panama. Does this “expert” know that Panama was once part of Colombia, and it seceded when given the chance and support of the US? What is Panama now was pretty much the ass side of Colombia and treated as such in the late 19th Century. It was only the prospect of the canal that started to make it valuable to the chiefs back in Bogota, but by that time the future Panamanians went “Eff you, we are keeping it for ourselves.” and after a short unrest, Panama came to be and they have been hating each other more ever since. When Colombia was having issued with the Cartels run by Pablo Escobar and his buddies and the Colombian government went after them, it was Panama that gave them refuge (for a fee, of course.)
And Cuba? Lord knows they fucked up Latin countries through the years, but their influence in the area has been reduced since the Russians and the Chinese moved their interests westward. It does not matter how much common ideology you have, even Socialist and Communist want/need/demand cash and they don’t have it. And even as revolutionary advisors, they do not have a great track record for decades now having failed pretty much anywhere they got involved in a “war of liberation” in the last four and a half decades.
For shortness’ sake, I will leave Mexico out of the "reasoning” but I believe that by now it is pretty clear that the idea these countries will suddenly join together and start a shooting war because Trump is deporting their citizens and these government are so excremental they do not want their own people back and are willing to invade and shoot it out with the US is just imbecilic. And that such prognostication came from an USMC intelligence officer makes you wonder if the requirement to be so is to place the crayons in proper order within 5 tries.
But he is the smart one and the American people the ignorant.
Hat Tip to Mike Kupari.
If you think you hate the Columbia versus Colombia mix up, you should hear what the Colombians have to say. And I always say Columbia is the name of a record club that was easy to sign up for, but impossible to quit, though it is so long ago know that I'm not sure anyone gets the reference
The last time we invaded Mexico, it wasn't even an official action, just an expedition launched by a general on his own authority if memory serves.
Excellent commentary.
