Fur is flying over Divemedic's
He made a couple of good posts about dogs attacking, specially Pit Bulls and it seems people got nut contorted about it. He had to lay the law down and I fully agree with him: His blog, his rules.
Now, you do have a right to have a PB and also you have the responsibility of what he does. Are they more prone to attack than other dogs? The evidence suggests so. That you beloved PB is incapable to bite anybody and it is all an exaggeration? Then you are dumb beyond help: All dogs will bite, and you better be ready for it.
When I had dogs, I trained them and loved them dearly. It was that training that removed the fear of dogs my wife had (She was badly bitten as child) because they were behaved enough that she learned how to be pack leader and control them. She went from being almost paralyzed with fear at the sight of a big German Shepherd and a Doberman to face them and chastise them when they did wrong even when at least one of the suckers outweigh her. And they obeyed her without reservation.

If you were paying attention, you may have noticed two words I used above: “pack leader.” They were not our fur babies, or friends or cuties, they were work animals, members of a pack and their position was always under us. Even being tens of thousands of years removed from wolfpack behavior, they still respond to pack politics. They were never given a chance to think they were above us or our family members and that was easily reinforced almost every day…. which was especially hard with the Shepherd because their brain reboots every time they fart.
And still as well trained that they were, we never lower our guard and understood that shit could get out of control, and they could attack somebody. When people came over to visit, they were put away in their pens. when taken out of the house to visit the vet, they were restrained with a leash made by yours truly and overengineered enough to tow a small car. Muzzles were at hand, but only used if there was no way to keep people away (Work dogs, remember? wink-wink) and when the vet was about to use the rectal thermometer.
The issue with pits and any big dog bred for combat is that 99.9999% of the owners treat them like a family member, do not educate the and forgive their trespasses. They are not taught they belong to a caste-group and are given always equal rights in the home. This is just barely passable if you have a Chihuahua and an almost assured clusterfuck with a big attack dog. At least the Mexican devils can be drop-kicked two streets down if they do stupid stuff.
I will be very aware if I am approached by a PB or any big dog because I know their owners are shit for brains who never trained them and if they are loose, is even a better confirmation of the initial assessment. If there is aggression towards me or mine, I will end up with using deadly force. I won’t be bitten, nor allow my loved one to be bitten by your “fur baby.”
And that is all.
