Last night we had rain and wind. I cannot call it a storm because it really does not fit what I am used to coming from Florida. There was indeed some rain, nothing that required the use of boats or at least high rubber boots and there was also wind that peaked in some cases 50 m.p.h.
I am already in bed, sleeping somewhat decently and I get woken up by some thudding noises outside. Paranoia being better than a half a dozen Cuban coffees removes any haze from my brain and after a quick peek in the monitor, I stepped outside to check what the hell made the noise.
I had to move those branches as they were half on my driveway and half on the street blocking one lane. I checked the rest of the formerly cleaned yard and found that my burn pile will increase in size considerably.
I truly though regular tress were made of a tougher stuff. I guess flora in South Florida in designed to be aerodynamic and literally go with the flow of hurricanes and strong tropical storms.
I can hear cars drive up and down the road and reducing speed at not the usual intervals which makes me think mine are not the only trees sharing wood on the asphalt.
Southern botany might be a bit too wind unfriendly.
up here we have billions of pine trees that once the rest shed their leaves in fall the pine become giant kites. kites that weigh hundreds or thousands of pounds. the power company pays stupid money to tree trimmers who drive around and TRIM branches like Mexican landscapers leaving giant trees mere feet from power lines… winds here year round can reach 60 mph… crack! crash! poof. no power.. generator is your best friend..
Half dozen cups?! Isn't that rather like a 48 volt battery on a 12 volt starter? :-)
